This is a wide-ranging, somewhat shallow look at becoming a published writer for pay. It has essentially nothing to do with the craft of writing, but rather simply getting published as the title implies. It begins with extremely general advice on setting yourself up as a writer: get good paper and envelopes; buy a good dictionary and thesaurus and up-to-date directory of potential markets. Set goals for yourself, including a time for writing. It warns that you may have to start off by writing for free; i.e., letters to the editor. But, hey, it might lead to a request for an op-ed! The books is for the most part just like this: very general advice. It might be good for someone who has just decided that they want to become a writer and has absolutely no knowledge of just what that entails. The book provides overviews of inding your place in "this Writing World", working with an agent (as if the neophyte who needs this book is going to need an agent early on), tackling the magazine market, the basics of book proposals, submission protocol, revising to meet agent or editorial demands, negotiating a contract, collaborating with an editor, making your book known and the wrap up: what to now that you're a writer. It's a feel-good book, intended to encourage the very newly ambitious writer. It is well written, but it really has no significant depth.Jerry
